Lennon Dakota Shooting Theory
On the evening of December 8, 1980, former Beatle John Lennon walked out of the Dakota apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side to find his car. What happened next was captured on police bodycam footage: Mark David Chapman, twenty-five years old, fired ███████████████████████ before an officer pinned him to a snowbank. The man who shot one of the most famous living people in the world was in handcuffs within ninety seconds. And yet, forty-four years later, the case has never fully closed.
The oldest thread connecting to the shooting runs through 1968. William Turner and John Christian wrote in their 1978 book that Sirhan Sirhan, the convicted assassin of Robert F. Kennedy, was ████████████████████████ . Philip Melanson echoed the claim in his 1993 volume, noting the Los Angeles coroner found RFK killed from behind while Sirhan stood at least three feet in front of him. Conspiracy analysts filed Lennon under the same index, arguing that if one assassin could be treated and directed, the second was simply a follow-up order.
The most improbable variant surfaced in a 2013 New York Magazine feature. It claimed Lennon died under ████████████████████████ , the instruction relayed to the then-unknown novelist Stephen King through magazine pages, with Chapman reduced to a stand-in who bore a passing resemblance to the Carrie author. Chapman had indeed read King's novel Carrie four times in the days before the shooting and identified with the character. The theory remains disputed, but it has never left the record.
The CIA angle gained weight when Zepezauer, a former arts editor, wrote in 1994 that there is evidence ████████████████████████ of RFK. He added that the coroner's report stated RFK was killed from behind while everyone agreed Sirhan was in front of him. Analysts cross-referenced this with Lennon's 1980 schedule, when the couple had grown politically active and Yoko Ono was pushing anti-nuclear messaging that reached inside Pentagon briefings.
No sealed file has been declassified. No second shooter was ever charged. The police report lists Chapman as sole actor, and the bodycam clip shows exactly what it shows. But the redactions in this record mark the spots where the story gets colder, and where the next clearance will decide whether the DAKOTA file opens or stays shut
